Description

A perfect blend of flaky pastry and creamy filling, these Cheese Danishes are a delightful treat for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • Optional: fruit preserves or fresh berries

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the cold, cubed butter and blend with a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually mix in 1/4 cup of cold water until the dough just comes together.
  4. Shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  5. In a medium bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth for the filling.
  6. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into squares that are roughly 4×4 inches.
  8. Place 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese filling in the center of each square.
  9. Fold the corners toward the center to form a pocket and pinch the edges to seal.
  10. Whisk together the beaten egg and milk; brush this mixture over each Danish.
  11. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  12. Let them cool slightly before serving. Optional: drizzle with a simple glaze or fill with fruit preserves.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider mixing lemon zest into the cream cheese filling. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
