Ingredients

  • 1 box angel food cake mix
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 4 – 6 cups neutral oil (such as canola or vegetable)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the angel food cake following the package instructions and let it cool completely.
  2. Slice the cooled cake into 1-inch thick slabs and then cut into 1-inch cubes.
  3. In one bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla for the wet batter.
  4. In another bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt for the dry batter.
  5. Heat oil in a pot to 350-375°F (175-190°C) for frying.
  6. Dip each cake cube into the wet batter, then coat in the dry batter before frying in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Drain fried bites on paper towels.
  8. Coat warm churro bites in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
