Description

These fudgy brownies combine rich chocolate and brewed espresso for a dessert that’s perfect for coffee lovers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup brewed espresso or strong coffee
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 2 tablespoons brewed espresso (for frosting)
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • Optional toppings: chocolate shavings, chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or hazelnuts), flaky sea salt, a dusting of cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan. Line with parchment if desired.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and stir in the granulated sugar until glossy.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool slightly (3-5 minutes) before whisking in the eggs one at a time and adding vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined.
  6. Fold in the brewed espresso and chocolate chips.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out mostly clean with a few moist crumbs.
  9. Let the brownies cool completely before frosting with the mixture of powdered sugar, brewed espresso, and cocoa powder.
  10. Add optional toppings as desired and cut into squares to serve.

Notes

For a shiny, crackly top, avoid overmixing the batter and whisk the sugar into the melted butter while warm.
