Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a loaf pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, spices, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each.
  5. Stir in the molasses until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the hot water, until combined.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
  8. Bake for 50-60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool before glazing with additional molasses if desired.
