Description

A warm, creamy casserole that combines seasoned meatballs with buttery mashed potatoes and rich gravy, perfect for cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for gravy)
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.
  2. Boil potatoes in salted water for 12-15 minutes until fork-tender, then mash with butter and milk or cream, seasoning to taste.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix ground beef or turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic, onion, Italian seasoning, and seasoning to taste; form into 18-24 meatballs.
  4. Brown meatballs in a skillet over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, ensuring they’re browned on all sides.
  5. Make gravy in the same skillet by melting butter, whisking in flour for 1 minute, then gradually adding beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder, simmering until thickened.
  6. Spread mashed potatoes in the baking dish, arrange meatballs on top, pour gravy over, and sprinkle cheese on top.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until gravy bubbles and cheese is melted; broil for 1-2 minutes for a browned top if desired.
  8. Let rest for 5 minutes, garnish with parsley, and serve hot.

Notes

For added flavor, brown onion before making the gravy. Use lean meats and reduce butter for a lower-fat version.
