Description

A delicious and customizable side dish perfect for holiday gatherings or family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of stale bread, cubed
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 4 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup dried cranberries or raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup nuts (e.g., walnuts or pecans, optional)
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery. Cook until they are softened. Stir in the garlic, thyme, and sage, cooking for another minute.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread, sautéed vegetables, dried cranberries, and nuts (if using).
  4. Gradually pour in the broth, mixing until the bread is moistened but not soggy.
  5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  7. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Use stale bread for the best texture. Feel free to add your favorite herbs or spices for more flavor. For a crispy top, broil for a few minutes after baking. Can be made a day ahead and baked just before serving.
