Description

This casserole combines the delightful flavors of French toast and a ham and cheese sandwich for a luxurious yet lazy breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup ham, diced
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Powdered sugar for topping
  • Jam for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and layer half of it in the bottom of the baking dish.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon. Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread.
  4. Sprinkle the diced ham and shredded cheeses over the bread layer. Top with the remaining bread cubes and pour the rest of the egg mixture over it.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  6. In the morning, remove the wrap and bake for 45 minutes or until golden and set.
  7. Let it cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar and serve with jam.

Notes

Ensure to use slightly stale bread for the best texture. Overnight soaking is key for flavor and consistency.
