Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 packet taco seasoning or homemade mix
- 2/3 cup tomato sauce or salsa
- Salt & pepper to taste
- 8 hard taco shells
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Mexican blend)
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1/2 cup diced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup diced red onion
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (optional)
- Sour cream (optional)
- Guacamole (optional)
- Jalapeño slices (optional)
Instructions
- Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the diced onion for about 5 to 7 minutes until translucent.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it into small crumbles, and cook until browned.
- Stir in minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute. Add taco seasoning and stir to coat the meat and onions. Cook for another minute to toast the spices.
- Pour in tomato sauce or salsa and let simmer on low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally and adjusting seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and spray a baking dish with cooking oil.
- Fill each taco shell with about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the meat mixture and top with shredded cheese. Arrange them upright in the baking dish.
- Sprinkle remaining cheese over the tops of the filled taco shells.
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the cheese is melted and the shells are crispy. Optionally broil for 1 to 3 minutes for extra crispness.
- Let cool for 5 minutes, then prepare toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, and cilantro.
- Serve the tacos with toppings for a customizable experience.
