Instructions
In a medium saucepan, combine milk and heavy cream over medium heat. Stir gently to avoid scorching.
If using cocoa powder, mix it with sugar first to form a paste before adding to the mixture. If using chocolate syrup, add it directly along with vanilla and a pinch of salt.
Heat until warm but do not boil.
Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or marshmallows. Serve immediately.
