Ingredients

  • 2 lbs chicken tenders or breasts, cut into strips
  • 3 cups pretzels, finely crushed
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 3 tbsp oil (for frying)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour (for the sauce roux)
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 1 ½ cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • Pinch of cayenne (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Crush pretzels finely and season with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  2. Set up a dredging station with seasoned flour, beaten eggs, and seasoned pretzel crumbs.
  3. Dredge chicken strips in flour, dip into eggs, and press into pretzel crumbs.
  4. Choose a cooking method: pan-fry, bake, or air-fry the chicken until golden and cooked through.
  5. For the sauce, melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in flour to form a roux. Gradually add milk until thickened, then stir in cheddar cheese and mustard.
  6. Serve the pretzel chicken drizzled with the mustard-cheddar sauce or on the side.

Notes

For extra crunch, double-coat the chicken. Ensure to let the coated chicken rest before cooking to help the crust adhere.
