Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Once melted, add the packed brown sugar and granulated sugar. Stir continuously until well combined and bubbling.
  3. Allow to boil for 3 to 4 minutes without stirring until it achieves a golden color.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt; the mixture will bubble up.
  5. Set aside the caramel to cool slightly.
  6. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  8. Pour the slightly cooled caramel sauce evenly over the crackers.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 to 7 minutes until the caramel is bubbling and golden.
  10. While baking, melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals.
  11. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the baked crackers while still warm.
  12. If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts over the melted chocolate.
  13. Allow to cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes, then cut into squares.
